Tayrona wasn’t founded in a boardroom; it was born on the open road, from a shared passion for exploration and a very personal understanding of the challenges of traveling in China.
Our founders, Elisabeth (from Germany) and Fabian (from Colombia), met in China in 2009, a classic tale of cross-cultural connection in the northern city of Changchun. Their relationship blossomed into a marriage that is a beautiful tapestry of Colombian warmth, German precision, and deep respect for Chinese culture. This unique blend is the heart of our company.
For years, we explored China on two wheels, cycling from the tropical coasts of Hainan to the vast landscapes of the northeast. These adventures were transformative, but they also highlighted a common frustration: finding inclusive, well-organized events that catered to the needs of the international community and those with specific dietary requirements like our own vegetarianism.
We asked a simple question: Why can’t exploring this incredible country be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of language or lifestyle?
In 2019, while Fabian was pursuing his PhD at Tsinghua University, we turned that question into our mission. Supported by a university business incubator and guided by mentors who believed in our vision, Tayrona was born. Our first steps— summer camps and a Mountain Bike Challenge—grew through the support of friends who shared our story on social media, built on a foundation of trust and the promise of a different kind of experience.
We’ve navigated the complexities of being entrepreneurs in China—from the infamous “name too long for the bank account” dilemma to identification verification hurdles to open a WeChat Official Account. Every challenge has taught us invaluable lessons in patience, creativity, and resilience, making us better equipped to serve you.
Our story is one of passion, perseverance, and a genuine desire to create a welcoming community for all who wish to explore healthier lifestyles.
