The Decline of Resilience in Today’s Youth

We’ve lived in China for around two decades now (Elisabeth arrived in 2003 and Fabian in 2008), and over the years, we’ve noticed a troubling trend: young people today are less resilient and less capable of handling tough situations compared to 20 years ago. Parents often prioritize academics over life skills, doing everything for their children—leaving them unprepared for real-world challenges. As educators deeply invested in youth development, we knew we had to create programs that build both mental and physical strength.

That’s why we design and organize various camps—Outdoor Adventure, Cycling, Gardening, Fun English, Cooking & Baking, and more—to help kids develop self-confidence, autonomy, independence, and resilience. This year, we took it further with our Tayrona GPC Triathlon Training Summer Camp in Weihai (July 20-31, 2025), where young athletes pushed their limits in swimming, cycling, and running.

More Than Just a Sports Camp

Weihai’s stunning landscapes—mountains, beaches, and cycling routes—made it the perfect location. Our goal was to help kids discover their physical and mental potential.

  • Swimming: The open-water challenges were the first chances for many of our campers to swim in the ocean, trusting their abilities without pool walls to hold onto.
  • Cycling: Most campers practiced cycling on road bikes for the first time! They improved their gear shifting, braking, and uphill laps—and the scenic beach ride was a definite highlight.
  • Running: They built endurance through sprints, long-distance runs, and beach jogs.

Each camper set personal goals—whether improving their streamline in front crawl, gaining better bike control, or running longer distances—and we witnessed higher achievements than originally expected. These kids truly showed us what tenacity and determination look like!

Mental Toughness & Health Workshops

Physical training was just one part of the experience. We also held Mental Toughness Workshops, teaching kids how to:

  • Stay calm under pressure
  • Handle distractions
  • Reframe negative thoughts
  • Overcome personal challenges

Daily Health Workshops covered nutrition, hydration, muscle recovery, and the importance of sleep. One fun activity demonstrated hydration’s importance—kids carried cups with small holes, racing to fill a team bucket before losing all their “water.”

An International Experience with Lasting Friendships

Our camp brought together campers and staff from Zimbabwe, Colombia, the USA, China, Germany, South Africa, and Russia. The immersive English environment helped non-native speakers improve rapidly.

Evenings were spent journaling and reflecting on the day’s challenges, followed by team-building games. The three teams—Black Fungus, Double Delicious Dumplings, and BOOM Waka Waka—created their own chants and competed in fun challenges.

The Grand Finale: The Tayrona Super Sprint Triathlon

Week one ended with paddleboarding and a hike up Likoushan, but the ultimate highlight was the Tayrona Super Sprint Triathlon

Watching these kids push through sore muscles, embrace discipline, and celebrate achievements—the kind of fulfillment video games can’t provide—was incredibly rewarding.
